December 25th has long been celebrated as the birth date of Jesus Christ but is this really the case? Was the Messiah really born on this date? This question has puzzled the minds of millions for a very long time and is still the case! The possibility of Jesus Christ being born on December 25th is questionable at best. Why will the bible be silent on an event with this magnitude? Almost every significant event in the life of Jesus Christ fulfills some old testament feast or prophesy but the date of December 25 has no fulfillment from the old testament. The timing of December 25th is at odds with the biblical accounts. I will present at least two reasons why Jesus Christ was not born on December 25th as is widely believed:
- No Old Testament Prophesy is Fulfilled. Why will an event so significant happen on a date with no theological significance? There are a total of seven feasts in the old testament. Four of these feasts, Passover, unleavened bread, first fruits and weeks have already been fulfilled to the letter. Three more feasts are left to fulfilled, trumpets, day of atonement and tabernacle. The feast of tabernacle is the last of the feasts. This feast symbolizes and foreshadows a time when God will come down and dwell or tabernacle among His people. This feast happen during the Hebrew month of Tishri, which is the 7th month of the Hebrew calendar. This is usually between the month ending September and mid-October, when the weather is generally mild not cold. This will agree perfectly with Luke 2:8-20, where the shepherds were in the field keeping watch over their flock at night, December is generally cold in Israel and less likely that the shepherd would be in the field watching over their flock.
- December Temperature is at Odds The December climatic condition is at odds with the biblical account of Luke 2:8-20, where shepherds were out at night watching over their flock.
In all likelihood, Jesus Christ was born about 15 the day of the month Tishri which corresponds to about October 15th our calendar . This is a perfect time for shepherds to be out tending their flock. John 1:14 is a perfect fulfillment of Leviticus 23:34, where God will become Man and tabernacle or dwell among His people.
