The Emotional Impact of The Iran War
There is a lot of talk about the impact of the Iran war on the global economy and rightly so as we witnessed the price of gasoline crossed the $4 mark a few days ago. The prices of a hosts of other commodities like fertilizer have also jumped, impacting the bottom line of farmers across the globe. All these losses pale in comparison to the human toll and loss of life as a result of the conflict. According to a Wikipedia entry, the Iran has resulted to the following number of deaths from the following countries: Iran 2076-7300, Lebanon 1530, Iraq 112, Israel 39 United States 15, Palestine 14, UAE 13 and Kuwait 10. Also about 39,526 have been injured in total. These numbers are somewhat easy to quantify but the emotional impact of the war remains a mystery. The levels of griefs, anxiety, fear, loneliness, stress, depression and even suicidal thoughts are certainly impossible to quantify. I was speaking with an Iranian American, whose friend, also an Iranian American was on the phone with his sister who was based in Iran,. The brother is based in the United States and as they were talking over the phone, he heard a loud noise in the background and the phone went dead. The brother in the United States tried to call the sister back to no avail and he suddenly collapsed as the result of a stroke. He survived the stroke but is now permanently paralyzed. There are probably millions around the world in somewhat similar situations. This is an unreported cost of the war.
